How to unfollow people who don’t follow you back on Instagram, safely
Following hundreds of accounts that never followed you back makes your feed noisy and your ratio lopsided. Instagram does not give you a list of those accounts, and it has no button to unfollow them all at once. You can still clean them up in an afternoon without handing your password to a mass-unfollow app. This guide shows the safe way: build the list for free, decide who to keep, then unfollow in small batches.
Step 1: Get the list of people who don’t follow you back
Scrolling your following list and opening every profile is slow and easy to get wrong. The faster way uses your own Instagram data:
- Request your data export. In Instagram, open Accounts Center, then Your information and permissions, then Download your information. Choose only Followers and following in JSON format. Our guide on how to download your Instagram data walks through each screen.
- Drop the file into the free checker. The not-following-back checker compares your followers with the accounts you follow and lists everyone who does not follow you back. It runs in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.
- Save the list. Copy it or download it as a CSV so you can work through it over a few days.
The export is a snapshot of the day you requested it. If someone followed you back yesterday, a newer export will show it.
Step 2: Decide who to keep
Not everyone on the list is a snub. Before you unfollow, sort the names into a few groups:
- Creators, brands, media and celebrities. They almost never follow back. If you follow them for their content, keep them.
- Friends and family. Some people simply do not use Instagram much, or they followed you from an old account. A quick message is kinder than a silent unfollow.
- Follow-for-follow accounts. Accounts that followed you only to get a follow back, then left, are the ones most people want to remove.
- Inactive and deleted accounts. Deactivated accounts can drop out of your followers while staying in your following list. Removing them tidies your list.
A useful rule: if you would not notice their posts missing from your feed, you can let them go.
Step 3: Unfollow in small batches
Instagram has no official bulk unfollow, so you will unfollow from the app or website yourself. Two ways make it quicker:
- From the following list. Open your profile, tap Following, and use the search field to find each name from your list. Tap the Following button next to it to unfollow. You never have to open the profile.
- From the built-in categories. At the time of writing, Instagram groups your following list into categories such as accounts you have interacted with least, and lets you sort by the date you followed. These are a good place to find old follows you no longer care about.
Go slowly. Instagram limits how many actions an account can take in a short time and does not publish the exact numbers, which can change. Unfollowing hundreds of accounts in a few minutes can trigger a temporary “Try again later” block. Spreading the work over several sessions and several days is the safest approach, especially for newer accounts.
Why mass unfollow apps are a bad idea
Apps and websites that promise to “unfollow everyone who doesn’t follow you back in one tap” have to act as you. That usually means they ask for your Instagram username and password, or for a login session. The risks are real:
- Account security. Anyone with your password can read your messages, post as you or lock you out.
- Automated activity flags. Instagram’s terms do not allow unauthorised automated actions. Bulk unfollowing from a third-party service can lead to action blocks, forced password resets or worse.
- Unclear data use. Your follower list and login details are valuable. Some of these services collect far more than they need.
The method on this page never needs your password. The export comes from Instagram itself, the checker runs locally in your browser, and every unfollow is a tap you make yourself. Our guide to Instagram stalker apps has a checklist for spotting risky tools of any kind.
Keeping your list clean afterwards
A one-off clean-up drifts out of date quickly. A few habits help:
- Run the checker again every month or two with a fresh export. Comparing two exports in the unfollowers tool also shows who left you in between.
- Be selective about follow-for-follow threads and follow trains. They bring followers who tend to leave again.
- Look at the mutual followers checker if you want the opposite list: the people who follow you both ways.
If you keep losing followers and want to understand why, our guide on why you might be losing followers covers the usual causes.
Where Peekd fits
Peekd does not unfollow anyone for you, and it never asks for your Instagram password. What it does is watch public accounts and keep a dated record of their follows and unfollows from the day you start tracking, with real-time alerts. Tracked on your own public account, that means you see who stops following you as it happens, and who is not following you back, without downloading a new export each time.
Peekd runs in the browser and on iPhone and Android, and the free plan covers one tracked account. It cannot see private or verified accounts, accounts with more than 10k followers, or anything before tracking started. Details are on how Peekd works, and the Instagram unfollow tracker page explains the unfollow alerts. You can also start from the Peekd homepage.
Frequently asked questions
Can I unfollow everyone who doesn’t follow me back at once?
Not with Instagram’s own tools. There is no official bulk unfollow. Apps that offer it act through your login, which puts your account at risk. Build the list with the free checker, then unfollow in small batches.
How many people can I unfollow per day?
Instagram does not publish an exact limit, and it varies by account. Unfollowing a few dozen at a time with breaks in between, spread across several days, is a cautious approach that avoids most temporary blocks.
Will people know I unfollowed them?
Instagram does not send a notification when you unfollow someone. They can still notice if they look at their follower list or use a tracking tool.
Do I need to give my password to see who doesn’t follow me back?
No. The not-following-back checker works from the data export you download from Instagram yourself and runs entirely in your browser.
Why are some people on the list even though they follow me?
The export reflects the day you requested it. If someone followed you back after that, or reactivated their account, a newer export will show the change.
Can Peekd unfollow accounts for me?
No. Peekd only tracks follows and unfollows on public accounts and alerts you to changes. Every unfollow stays your own decision and your own tap.
