How to know if someone blocked you on Instagram

Instagram never tells you when someone blocks you, so you have to read the clues. The good news is that a block leaves a recognizable pattern, and one simple test can separate it from the look-alike situations: a deactivated account, a changed username, a private profile or a plain unfollow. This guide walks through the signs, the test and the cases that fool people.

The quick answer: signs you have been blocked

If someone blocked you, you will typically notice most of the following at once:

  • Their profile cannot be found. Searching their username shows no result, or opening it shows no posts and no profile details.
  • Their posts and stories are gone for you. You cannot see their content, even if it was public.
  • They disappeared from your lists. They no longer show in your followers or following lists.
  • Their old comments and likes on your posts vanish from view, and you cannot tag or mention them.
  • You cannot message them. Existing chat history may remain on your side, but you cannot start fresh contact through their profile.

Any single sign is weak. Together they are strong, but the only way to be sure is the test below, because a deactivated account looks almost identical from your side.

The simple test to confirm a block

Blocking works on logged-in accounts. That gives you a clean way to check:

  1. Search for them while logged in. Note whether the profile appears.
  2. View their profile logged out. Open instagram.com/their-username in a private browser window, or while logged out of the app.
  3. Compare. If the profile loads fine logged out (and the account is public) but is missing when you are logged in, you are very likely blocked. If it is missing in both cases, the account is probably deactivated, deleted or renamed.

A second check that works well: ask a mutual friend to look up the account, or look from a different account of yours. If they can see it and you cannot, that points to a block. If nobody can, the account itself is gone or has been renamed.

Private accounts complicate the logged-out test, because logged out you see little of them either way. For a private account, rely on a friend’s view and on the other signs.

Blocked, deactivated, restricted, private or unfollowed

These all feel the same in the moment but look different when you check carefully.

SituationWhat you seeLogged-out / friend check
Blocked youProfile missing or empty, no posts or stories, gone from your listsVisible to others and when logged out (if public)
Deactivated or deletedProfile missing, same as a blockMissing for everyone
Changed usernameOld username not found; the person is still there under a new nameOld handle is missing for everyone; the new one works
Went privateProfile exists, shows “This account is private”, posts hiddenProfile page loads for everyone, posts hidden
Unfollowed youProfile still opens normally; you just stop appearing in their followingNo difference
Restricted youYou cannot tell directly. Your comments are hidden from others and your DMs go to their requests (how to spot a restrict)Not visible to you at all
Muted youNothing changes for you at allNot detectable

Restrict and mute are designed to be invisible to the other person, so no honest tool can detect them. Treat anyone selling a “restrict detector” with suspicion.

Why “who blocked me” apps are unreliable

Instagram offers no list of who blocked you, and it does not send an alert. Apps that claim to show “who blocked me” usually infer it from lists that changed, the same signals you can check by hand, and some are simply guessing or are scams that want your password. A person can disappear from a list because they blocked you, deactivated, renamed their account or were removed by Instagram, and from the outside those can look the same.

Never hand your Instagram password to a site or app promising blocker detection. If an app says it can reveal blockers with certainty, ask how, because there is no public data source for that.

What you can check honestly is whether someone stopped following you: compare two of your own data exports with the free Instagram unfollowers tool, then use the profile test above to tell a block from an unfollow.

What to do if you were blocked

It is hard not to take it personally, but a block is often about a person managing their own space rather than a verdict on you. Reasonable next steps: do not create new accounts to get around it, since evading a block can escalate the situation and can break Instagram’s rules, and give the person room. If you need to reach someone about something practical, use another channel you already share.

Where Peekd fits

Peekd does not claim to detect blocks. What it does is show who follows and unfollows a public account, with dates from when you start tracking, so you can tell the difference between “they unfollowed me” and “they vanished entirely”. If you want to watch who is leaving your own account, try the unfollow tracker or see who is not following you back. Details on what Peekd can and cannot see are on the how Peekd works page.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does Instagram notify you when someone blocks you?

No. Instagram does not tell you when you are blocked, and it does not tell the other person when you block them.

Can I see a list of people who blocked me?

No, Instagram does not provide one. Apps that claim to show such a list are inferring it or guessing, and some are scams.

How do I tell a block from a deactivated account?

Check from another account, a friend’s phone, or while logged out. If the profile loads there but not for you, you are probably blocked. If it is missing for everyone, it is deactivated, deleted or renamed.

Can I see someone’s profile if they blocked me?

Not while logged into the blocked account. A public profile may still be viewable logged out on the web, but that does not undo the block.

Could I be restricted instead of blocked?

Yes. With Restrict the profile stays fully visible to you, but your comments and messages are quietly held back. If you can still see the profile, read how to know if someone restricted you.

Can Peekd tell me who blocked me?

No. Peekd tracks follows and unfollows on public accounts and does not claim to detect blocks, restricts or mutes.
