Find your Instagram mutual followers
Mutual followers are the accounts you follow that also follow you back. Instagram doesn’t give you that list directly, but your own data download holds everything needed to build it. Drop the export below and the tool compares your followers with your following and lists every mutual follow, with counts and follow dates.
Everything is calculated in your browser. Your files are not uploaded anywhere.
How to download your Instagram data
- 1
Request your data
In Instagram, open Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Download your information and export only Followers and following as JSON (full guide).
- 2
Download the ZIP
Instagram emails you when the file is ready, often within minutes. Download it while the link is valid.
- 3
Drop it into the tool
Drop the ZIP above as it is. It is read in your browser and never uploaded.
What counts as a mutual follow
An account is a mutual when it appears in both lists: you follow them (following.json) and they follow you (followers_1.json). Usernames are compared without regard to upper and lower case. The date next to each name is when you followed them, newest first, which makes it easy to spot recent connections.
The same comparison also tells you the opposite groups. Check the not-following-back checker to see who you follow without a follow in return, and who follows you that you don’t follow.
Ways to use the mutuals list
- Tidy up your following list by keeping the people who actually engage with you in both directions.
- Find your core community of real connections rather than one-way follows.
- Export it as a CSV to sort or filter in a spreadsheet, or copy the usernames to paste into notes.
Comparing two different accounts
This tool compares the followers and following of one account: the one whose export you provide. Instagram doesn’t let anyone download another person’s lists, so a comparison between two people needs each of them to share their own export, or you can compare what you both see on public profiles by hand. If you only want to follow public account changes over time, Peekd records new follows and unfollows with dates, for public accounts only.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between mutual followers and mutual friends?
Here, mutual followers are people you follow who follow you back. Instagram’s “followed by” lines on profiles are different: they show people you follow who also follow that account. This tool covers the first meaning.
Why is my mutual count lower than I expected?
Accounts that were deactivated, renamed or deleted since the export won’t match, and large exports can be split over several files. Drop every followers file, or the whole ZIP, so none are missed.
Can I see mutual followers with someone else?
Not with this tool. It only has your own data. Instagram doesn’t offer a download of another person’s followers, and anything claiming otherwise should be treated with suspicion.
Does it work with close friends?
The close friends file isn’t part of the mutual calculation. The tool uses only your followers and following lists.
Is it safe to use my Instagram data here?
Yes. Your files are never uploaded: the ZIP is read by JavaScript in your own browser tab. It even works in airplane mode once the page has loaded. Delete the ZIP when you’re done.
